Dracaena originate from Africa and form a genus of about 40 species. Most are indoor plants, grown for their foliage, and are often confused with cordylines. Grown outdoors dracaenas need a warm sunny spot and well drained soil. The most common outdoor species is Dracaena draco, known as the Dragon Tree. A 6000 year old specimen (blown down in a gale) in Tenerife reached a height of 20m and a width of 15m.
